On the trending Fire Horse hype
The fetishization and flattening of culture
Honestly, I feel triggered every time that I see another Fire Horse post pop up in my feed. How many times can this regurgitated wisdom be repackaged and rebranded? It is endless apparently.
I wonder: How many trees will be cut down? How many waterways will be polluted? How many wildlife habitats will be destroyed by data centers – just so we can copy-paste lines from GPT to seem wise?
It is an interesting phenomenon to observe. Nearly everyone has the Fire Horse in the forefront of their awareness. Yet very few people have any depth of understanding around what that actually means, and how it is combined and distinct from other big energies driving cosmic weather patterns this year. And that includes me. Though I have been doing a bit of research into this over the past several weeks.
Fire Horse years are relatively rare. They occur every 60 years. What is interesting about this cycle is that it is a double Yang Fire.
Because the year that begins in February 2026 is a Yang Fire year – that is the Heavenly Stem, one of ten. The Heavenly stems combine each of the five elements of Taoist cosmology (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood) with Yang or Yin energy. That creates a 10-year cycle.
It is also the year of the Horse – that is the Earthly branch, one of twelve. This is one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, which you’ve probably seen printed on your placemat at a Chinese restaurant at some point. Each of these animals also have an element and energy associated with it. The Horse happens to be Yang Fire. So, when the year is both a Horse year and a Yang Fire year, it is a double Yang Fire year.
But there are other patterns coinciding that make this year a big deal. 2026 is a powerful year of permanent transformation and new beginnings. I am not going to go into them in detail, because I am not an astrologer, a feng shui expert, or numerologist. If you want to do your own research into the overlapping cycles of 2026, you can calculate the LCM (least common multiple) to find the reoccurrence timeframe for two overlapping cycles.
Horse year, 12 year cycle
Yang Fire year, 10 year cycle
Numerology Universal 1 Year, 9 year cycle
Saturn-Neptune conjunction, 36 year cycle
Saturn-Neptune in Aries, 1500-2000 year cycle
Saturn-Neptune at 0 degrees Aries, ~9,000 year cycle
Without even doing any math, it’s pretty easy to see that we are experiencing some massive change this year that no one can really anticipate. If we are honest, we really have no freaking clue what we are in for.
Here is the post that I ended up sharing to Instagram this week (full text below) in an attempt to try to add a bit of nuance to this conversation. Perhaps this was a futile effort, since this has already become more of a conflagration than a conversation at this point.
Our Yang dominant, doing- centered overculture hypes the Fire Horse as go-getter energy. It has co-opted many voices to reinforce this messaging. You’ve heard the narrative: Don’t get left behind. Ride or die. It’s go time. Honestly the vibe is super anxiety inducing. By design, if you ask me.
There is indeed a big initiation this year. Saturn and Neptune at 0 degrees of Aries heralds a never-before-in-human-history level of cosmic reset energy. We are undergoing a complete reconstruction of our reality, and this week in February is the fork in the road where we can no longer turn back anymore.
But please, let’s not conflate the overlapping energy cycles in 2026 with Fire Horse. It’s not just an oversimplification; it’s cultural misappropriation.
Horses are sensitive, intuitive and socially aware beings. Only colonized horses carry a rider to compete in a race. Wild horses run free, exploring terrain. It’s true, Horse energy is about leadership. But not the kind that dominates others, thinking that it knows best. It’s the kind of leadership that listens deeply. Yes, Horse energy is also about forward movement. But not the kind of movement that rushes to gallop full speed ahead. It’s the kind that paces itself well. And yes, Horse energy is about courage, but not for heroic solo acts. It sparks solidarity in bold collective action… like what we see in Iran and Minnesota.
Fire element in Taoist tradition represents a phase in a dynamic alchemical process: burning Wood, to make Earth. It tells us that it’s time for a revolution. Fire stands at the crossroads of growth, death and creation… We need patience, grounding and a steady hand to prevent burnout in this transition. Fire incinerates structures to fertilize the ground for new growth. It represents breaking free from an old form, to move to another state of being.
The Fire trigram has two outer Yang lines that contain a broken line of Yin within. Fire appears to be fully Yang when you observe from outside, but it is empty inside. Fire obscures a hidden vulnerability: total dependency on its fuel source.
We don’t need to push harder in a Fire Horse year. What’s moving this year is way beyond us. The cosmos is already facilitating massive change, with high level of pressure and intensity. We need to stay centered and calm and tend to self-care.
2026 is for sure going to bring ground-shaking, irreversible changes. We can’t even imagine what is coming next, because we have no frame of reference. Let’s not assign this bigness to Fire Horse alone, just because it sounds mystical and exotic. That is fetishizing and flattening a rich ancient wisdom tradition.
We are entering a renaissance era where we enrich life with our differences... adding colors to the spectrum, by being human. At least, that’s my opinion.
I watched the rapid proliferation of Fire Horse wisdom on social media this year, and saw how it pervaded every nook and cranny of my reality with relatively uniform messaging. It is like a dye tracer in the information system. To me, it looks like a case study for mind control. This is how brainwashing happens. It seems harmless enough. Just some pop astrology. Light and fun… Like Hello Kitty. But what if it’s not? Not harmless, I mean?
We take in heaps of information, without embodying the wisdom. We hear a story and pass it on, without knowing the source. We parrot narratives that we confirm our beliefs, without questioning. We accept what we see at face value, without looking past the surface. We repeat the lines we are given, without critical thinking. Do you see the problem?
I would love to see self-expression that is geared towards depth rather than volume. I would love to see social media full of unique insights and lived wisdom instead of copy-pasted bot-generated content. I would love to see us speak to more of what is true and different about ourselves. I would love for us to stop dehumanizing our own individual expression, by outsourcing creativity to machine learning.
Wishing you blessings for the Lunar New Year. May you be resourced and regulated. May you be calm and grounded. May you find peace and ease throughout the wild ride ahead.
