No AI was used in writing this essay. It was not even used for editing, because I ran out of free credits working on my website this week. So sorry for the typos and run-on sentences. All thoughts and words are mine. Read my AI policy here.

If I described someone you’ve never met as being a “spiritual person,” what image would that conjure in your head?

The image that is reflexively pops into your head comes from pattern matching. An association between spiritual communities and the people inhabiting them. A connection between spiritual practices and the people teaching them. Based on your lived history, it might conjure some common vocabulary or typical fashion. It might call to mind a set of mannerisms, personality characteristics, or expected lifestyle choices.

The mechanisms for putting the picture together are not too different than what a LLM does when we type in a prompt.

And what about the resulting image that is pulled? A concept. A construct. Something assembled as a best guess from past experience. But it’s not truth. All of what is returned through this retrieval process is identity. All of this is ego. All of this – if we leave it unexamined – can become a trap.

I see a lot of people are rejecting AI as evil or dangerous. There is a lot of arguing against it on principle, while promoting a self-view as humanists or environmentalists. It’s similar to the way that many “spiritual” people reject money. Both AI and money are high velocity vehicles of creation. They amplify our signal, and expand the impact of our efforts. Historically, we have seen these vehicles being misused and abused. Of course, makes us “good people” want to have nothing to do with them.

As neutral vehicles, both AI and money have no impulse or orientation of their own. We are in the driver’s seat. Pause and check, especially if “spiritual” is a label that you resonate with. Do you think of yourself as higher or better than people who care about money? Do you think of yourself as higher or better than people who use AI tools? Do you think of yourself as higher or better than “muggles” or “NPCs”?

That is not spirituality. That is supremacy dressed in beige linen and mala beads.

Being for or against AI as a blanket statement is binary thinking. It’s yet another iteration of the entrenched ideology that we have seen cause so much damage to the planet while causing suffering for humanity. If you want to play to your human-ness, embracing nuance, seeing texture and integrating context is where it’s at.

No AI was used in writing this essay. The words were entirely human-crafted by me, from end to end. Claude was consulted only for title selection, cutting redundancies, and untangling my mixed metaphors. All thoughts are mine. Read my AI policy here.

The wellness world is roiled since Bryan Johnson (aka “the healthiest man alive”) announced his diagnosis with an incurable autoimmune disease. In his own words, his stomach is eating itself. But this isn’t just one biohacking extremist’s immortality quest gone sideways. It’s a celebrity-sized example of humanity’s blind hubris in the drive to dominate nature.

He’s poured millions into advanced tests, expensive treatments, and experimental supplements. The best care money can buy. All oriented around how to not die. His declared goal: immortality by 2039. Behind the personality fixated on being forever young, there’s a longer-standing cause. His story is a flaring symptom of a pathological obsession with wellness – a slow cancer, metastasized through the collective.

Not dying is the endpoint he chased down every available avenue, bypassing balance or moderation. But instead of immortality, he found the body’s defense system attacking itself from inside. Despite the sophisticated program designed to defeat nature, his system has turned against the basic nature keeping him alive.

Yet the diagnosis has barely broken his stride. There was no pivot. Not even a pause. No sign he might consider another approach. He’s so invested in the ideology of immortality — nothing will stop him from proselytizing it, not even closeness of death. If anything, he’s doubling down on his original strategy. Instead of “maybe this isn’t working,” the thought seems to be, “I will try harder.”

This dynamic is present at many registers. What do we strive towards as improvement or for optimization? Could our destination-fixation be causing destruction, despite us being utterly certain that we’re working towards anything but our demise? When we fail to achieve the desired effect, we can either redouble efforts or let the interruption of information be a checkpoint to reassess.

Inner division and self-destruction

Autoimmune disease. Spiritual dismemberment. What do these things have in common? Whether it’s a specific bodily function or an instance of human incarnation, there’s this thing that exists for a particular purpose. But then the aberration happens. There’s loss of contact with greater context. We disconnect from nature and from spirit. Forms morph and start to move (unknowingly) contrary to their designed intention.

Without ecosystem awareness, in-sight degrades into a myopic lens. This lens on reality overemphasizes one part or one participant while blurring the background sponsoring its existence. Locked in hyperfocus, we can no longer zoom out or zoom in. We become host to unconscious acts of self-harm — acts undertaken by rational actors sincerely convinced of their own helpfulness.

Bryan Johnson’s adversarial relationship with his body is well-publicized. He has referred to parts of himself that needed to be scolded, disciplined, or even fired: “Evening Bryan, you’re fired.” Because these wayward parts were in the way of his goal of perfect health, they had to be cut out. Is it any wonder that parts of his body are in-fighting amongst themselves? Or is that simply matter following the mind?

And, I am also confused and uncertain about how to show up and be of service right now.

Is a live group container for co-processing, co-witnessing, and co-creation, something that’s useful right now? It’s an extremely common procedure, the doctor says. But nothing about what’s happening is commonplace for me.

For a year, I’ve been having irregular periods and excessive bleeding, probably largely because of this benign growth that has taken residence in my womb space. A sign and symptom of imbalance on multiple levels. Hormonal, yes. But also energetic, emotional, and financial.

Two months ago, I had heavy bleeding that lasted 16 days. I was so depleted. I nearly fainted one morning as I tried to stand up from my bed. I ended up at the local clinic getting an emergency IV drip. I sobbed, looking at the tube feeding nutrients into my arm. I was in disbelief, seeing myself like this. I felt sorry for myself. It was a slap in the face. I realized I can’t continue to do things the way I’ve been doing.

We want to be proud of ourselves — as the overachievers in getting enlightened. We like to think we are the good ones, triumphing over evil. But here’s the rub: If we imagine ourselves as virtuous, it surely means that we are the villain from another person’s perspective.

There’s no way to be a light worker, without also being a shadow worker. In order for us to be able to travel inter-dimensionally, it requires a sense of familiarity and ease with both. Light and dark. Life and death. Creation and destruction. It all comes from the same source in the end.

If we identify with one aspect more than the other, we’re just putting on a personality according to our individual bias. It is preference, not truth. Because the truth contains both in equal measure. But you know, every good story requires dynamic tension. There must be the main character, as well as the circumstances that shape that character’s development. Neither one of these things can exist without the other.
